the great sign


















A circa 1965 jumpy, bumpy 8 mm home movie of what I believe to be the greatest neon sign of all time. The company called it "The Great Sign" and no product was ever more aptly named. As a boy on family vacations, I would invariably run out at sunset to watch it come alive. There, standing in front of the great neon tubes and watching the incandescent bulbs chase as the solenoids spoke with their clack clack clack was the wonder and glory of postwar American society.

One day an idiot with a marketing degree decided it was outmoded and ordered it dead. He killed the brand at the same time. They will never recover. They don't deserve to.
